History

The Remodelors™ Council was formed in 1978 to support the many contractors who were turning to remodeling to compensate for the downturn in housing starts beginning in the 1970’s. The name later changed to NCBIA Remodelers.

It was tough being in the building trades in the late 1970’s early 1980’s. If a deep recession wasn’t enough, all-time high interest rates, a high as 21%, seemingly were a conspiracy to strangle any growth in the housing industry. Literally, all new construction was halted and local builders turned to remodeling to stay alive. Foreclosures reached staggering heights.

Bob Nickoloff, then president of Nickoloff Builders, was instrumental in forming the Remodelors™ Council (NCBIA Remodelers) and served as their first chairman. The NCBIA Remodelers was formed under the federation of the National Association of Home Builders to support those companies in the remodeling business to provide education on codes and legislation at the local, state, and national level. Working together they could keep up-to-date on the on the latest materials and remodeling techniques.

The Lorain County JVS used the members of the NCBIA Remodelers to put together their curriculum for the Building Trades Academy. The Building Trades Academy students have a National Association of Home Builders Student Chapter offering student competition and recognition in the building trades.

In the 1980’s the NCBIA Remodelers built the center display at the Home Shows that were held at the Midway Mall. The displays were as elaborate as a home or at the least a partial home with open views of rooms. The Home Show moved from Midway Mall to the Lorain County JVS and then to Lorain County Community College.

The NCBIA Remodelers also had a radio show for many years first at WOBL and then later at WEOL. The show was aired each Saturday morning and was hosted by Executive Officer Bob Sexton along with NCBIA Remodelers Rick Hutman and Mick Mackert.

Today the NCBIA Remodelers have representatives at the local, state and national level keeping them informed of any code changes or legislation effecting their industry. They also sponsor education and certification classes necessary to the remodeling industry.
